Reports To: Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs - Strategic Initiatives

Description: The Instructional Designer supports faculty in effectively integrating technology into their teaching through a focus on evidence-based teaching practices, instructional innovation, UX principles, and ongoing assessment. The ID facilitates the exploration and adoption of applications, tools, and resources that enhance teaching in learning with technology in online and blended courses, and contributes to a robust practice of assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of adopted practices.

Responsibilities:
Serve as resource to Carroll University faculty and instructors
  • Partner with faculty seeking to use technology as a means of facilitating innovation in teaching and learning in both online and blended courses
  • Apply current instructional design methodologies and evidence-based practices for online and blended learning
  • Support and train faculty as they develop online and/or blended courses and adopt new technologies in their teaching
  • Provide educational opportunities for faculty related to technology and pedagogy through workshops, webinars, JIT modules, 1:1 sessions, etc.
  • Assist with establishing and disseminating technology-related teaching policies for faculty

    Serve as resource for assessment in teaching and learning
  • Collaborate with faculty and Academic Affairs to articulate standards, definitions, and best practices for teaching and assessing in online and blended courses
  • Work closely with the Director of Assessment and the AVP of Strategic Initiatives to evaluate the effectiveness of online and blended teaching practices, tools, pilots, etc.
  • Contribute to the communication of assessment results to faculty and other stakeholders
  • Integrate assessment results into new and revised instructional design work, contributing to Carroll's culture of continuous improvement

    Collaborate with related offices and colleagues
  • Develop and sustain effective working relationships with colleagues working in related areas including Information Technology Services (ITS), Faculty Development, Assessment, and Disabilities Services, collaborating and coordinating with them as needed
  • Collaborate with the deans and academic affairs leadership to set and meet goals to increase the number of online and blended courses offered annually
  • Design and lead faculty development related to the integration of effective pedagogies with LMS training, user experience, copyright, accessibility, and universal design principles, including workshops, seminars, and JIT modules.
  • Create and maintain an open flow of communication with faculty about teaching with technology, including upcoming schedules, LMS updates, new resources, etc.

    Departmental Service and Professional Development
  • Collaborate with ITS to identify trends and support pilot programs for promising emerging technologies
  • Attend training, events, and conferences related to professional responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications:
    Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Two-to-five years' experience in instructional design; relatable experience in higher education preferred
  • An understanding of effective post-baccalaureate pedagogies
  • The ability to work effectively with faculty across disciplines
  • Experience teaching at the college level preferred
  • Instructional Design credential preferred
  • Familiarity with Quality Matters preferred
  • Experience with adaptive courseware preferred

    Technology Skills:
  • Basic HTML and Flash programming knowledge
  • Experience administering at least one using a Learning Management System; experience with Canvas preferred.
  • Familiarity with a variety of academic software applications
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to acquire new technical skills

  • Commitment to academic excellence and academic integrity
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with faculty and staff through a consultative, collaborative approach
  • Ability to adjust to changing work environment and to respond to changing institutional needs
